hi all
courtesy of somebody at Transport Dept (don't know if its National or Provincial)
the section of the N12 here in Kimberley, where FC017 & FC074 are situated, was re-tarred a couple months ago
they laid on a layer of tar about 10-20cm deep and have covered the speed-trapping lines
like i said, coupla months ago - been waiting to see if anybody from the Traffic authorities came to "fix" but nothing yet - so guys don't have to worry now about speeding there
don't think its affected the red-light ops
w.r.t. MT's in Kimberley (all in 60KPH zone) - think the proximity should be reduced to 500m
Rob - i think you should place the POI-loader forum topic also under this section
regards

Hey Iqbal - with the sort of fancy stuff Revo tells us all about that the lads are using now (and going to use ) it's either not going to be long for those triggers to be 'fixed' or updated to something else. I wouldn't want to bet on it.
I've been working through the Road Safety database and was wondering whether we shouldn't consider nudging the Urban MT proximities a little lower ... just wondering at this stage though. The MT radius is of course determined because of the variability in placement of sites whereas the FC's are based on receiving at least a reasonable warning in time, based on the ruling speed zone there. I do think it may go a way to sorting some conflicts (or off-route warnings) though.
Rob will pick up on your suggestion later - he's away from his desk for a moment.

Hi Shorty. Iqbal,
I have been following various comments and feedback as regards conflicts etc. I also have to agree with Iqbal's comments as regards the reduction of perimeter settings on MT's (causing off-route warnings), like the one in Quinn Road here in Kimberley. I have in fact reduced some of the others in Kimberley myself. Problem is though, everytime you update the database, you have to alter those points againg manually!
Question to Guru Shorty - where you have a long "risk distance", would it not be better to have a series of smaller perimeter "circles", than one big perimeter which results in off-route warnings?
Cheers Guys.
Hein

Heink
I have similar situations where I wanted to make some alterations to Appearance, warning zones, and reactions of some Hazards. - I made a once-off work-around!
Cut the specific Hazards from their current files and paste it in a clean, fresh directory with describing name!
Then do the editing, addition etc. and save the file as .gpx!! - Treat it with Abri's converter (if you want) and keep that "sub-directory" inside the POI's-directory from which you would normally upload to the GPSr via POI Loader.
Next time you update the RS data, simply open each one of the files in Mapsource and delete the files you have copied to that "personal" directory! - Go about your normal procedure.... wrt converting, etc!!
.....and voila!! - No need for repeating the tedious process!! - I have various similar files and Directories in which I have specific files that I want to react or appear differently from the ones available as "raw" data!!

Hi Guys,
The question as to why some proximity zones that overlap react and other's don't is still a puzzle for me - haven't yet come across a "Compiler's Manual" that answers all the questions I have - in the way I want to express them
As far as HZ's and FC's are concerned we have a speed-zone related proximity setting (such that you will receive no less that 10 sec prior warning of an FC or HZ ahead) That's all good and well 'cos these are fixtures and their positions are known to within hand-held GPS limits.
When it comes to the MT's we use a 1.0km radius primarily to take into account the variability of the shady spots along a particular section .... BUT don't forget that an MT position may legally start monitoring/lock your speed at 500 metres away from the location. Only an eagle-eye would be able to discern such an installation. If the radius is reduced - and it's your database so just say what settings you want used - then one could be in a situation of being warned right at the limit of lock; or say 100m only of that.
What will be very difficult to handle is to have each MT zone set on "merits". I just don't know if I'd be able to handle that sort of diversity - if need be though, would work at it for you all, you know that

Heink,
One can globally alter any waypoint property in a list of waypoints - except the name of course. All you need do is click one then select all (Ctrl-A) - right-click - select Waypoint(s) Properties then go change any field you desire. If it's all the MT's you wish to set for yourself at say 600m then change the proximity to 0.6 and click OK - job done. (Remember proximity setting unit is kilometres so if you enter 600 your GPS will blow a little smoke . MapSource will save this file as *.gdb unless you specifically scroll to *.gpx and then save. Having done that you'll still be asked if you want to save the file - if you again answer yes - a *.gdb of the same will be created.
The 600m file is the one you put into your POI Loader upload directory together with all or any of the others.

Shorty - Thanks again for the enlightenment!!
My penny's worth!!
The way I see the RS data (from a consumer point of view), is that it's "raw" data which are all set and edited to a default standard! - Most of which, suits my personal needs just fine!!
There are some points however, like the twelve Traffic Control stations (Weigh bridges) and all of the CCTV points (I've added about fifteen to my personal list) that I would still like to be warned about, but I'd like to identify what kind of alert I get and also would like to distinguish between the different hazards.
So, I've taken them out of those original files and keep them in separate .gpx files with unique attributes, for my own purposes!
If I had the choice, I'd keep the three files just as they are now!!

Thanks Schalk - I hear you. As to CCTV main road surveillance I don't think it's wise to list each individually since this would simply clutter for no real reason. I know why you have them in your database though but that's OK. It would be really nice if we could create a point at each end of a surveilled road that simply brought up a banner (like a hazard warning say) that simply said 'CCTV zone N1 22km' without the point reacting as a speed alert at 22kph and that being a ribbon proximity, it would chirp as you entered that roadway from other feeder roads and not outside of it.
Can but wait on this one I'm afraid.
What is arising (though it doesn't seem to be a major panic as of now) in some mapset-dense areas where there are several points and there is overlap too, some points do not react specifically and some do not react at all - from reports we've had. I can't be absolutely sure that these are not model specific, or setting specific or firmware updates being behind nor can I be sure that it is database density specific. So we're in a bit of limbo here at the moment. I agree with many - I would rather receive a few erroneous chirps than none at all.
I have tried to 'clean' the data though by nudging an N-route MT that's being taken from a road bridge crossover (and sometimes an FC just a little) so that these trigger only on the N-route if thats where the activity is. I think this should go a long way to resolving the cross-over double-chirps.

Hi Schalk, Shorty,
Thanks for the feedback and valuable info. I am sure there's a lot of us who can learn from this!!!

Our pleasure Hein
The more we debate and worry away at these things the more perfect (and useful) the data will become. In the meantime we live with a few deficiencies - but keep the reports coming
