Hi
I got my 710 two day ago and still have, I suspect a bit to learn.
I’m using a mac (OS X 10.4.11) and It appears that I can’t use
Mapsource. Is this true?
I’ve downloaded Bobcat and everything is working fine except that the
standard map (US v2) is inaccurate and bit low in the detail department.
Can I download other better maps into Bobcat?

Welcome to the forum christo

A few questions........

1. Have you registered your 710 on the Garmin Website?

2. Do you have / have you purchased the unlock code for your map?

3. Is your setup Plug&Play (map on SD card)?

Maps will not show detail untill unlocked. Can you see detail on the GPSr?

More user will I assume, jump in here to help, but we need info from you.

What GPSr do you have? (Ah see it is the 710)

Cheers

RodHill has asked several pertinent questions (Thanks for stepping in Rod), but we need to clarify one or two points.

Garmap don't offer mapsets for downloading (not yet, anyway), and we don't unfortunately discuss maps made or distributed by other companies (for obvious reasons: we don't make them).

Then, if you bought the 710 locally, it would have come preloaded with a Garmap mapset; this would require you to register the unit under the 'plug and play' banner on our home page.

And, no, you can't use MapSource: hence Bobcat for the Mac users. And while Garmin in the USA offer Bobcat, the local agents - Avnic - are not yet geared up to offer Mac adapted mapsets or support for local Mac users.

Now this is where us PC users enter often unexplored territory: we don't have much expertise in this area, so we're learning as we go along. My suggestion below is therefore highly speculative (and I should not actually offer it).

If you want to use one of our Garmap mapsets in Bobcat, you will need to acquire the Garmap African Series 2008 DVD (if you want the lastest version).

You would then have to install MapSource off this DVD onto a PC (I know.... yuk). Having done that you would have to unlock and download the mapset onto your 710.

This, I understand, sets you up for using Garmap on the Mac with Bobcat provided that you go to the next step: convert Garmap for use on Bobcat using 'MapConverterforWindows_2003Beta.exe (see Gondwana's post here on the link here suggested by RodHill).

This is where my limited expertise ends. Would suggest that you read the discussion on the link and also send specific Bobcat questions to this email address - mac.bobcat@garmin.com (although they in turn will not be able to assist you on Garmap issues; even though we make these mapsets under license from them).

I bought my 710 locally with a preloaded map.
What’s the plug and play deal?
To Robf: Is it possible to copy and convert the map already on my 710
through said steps for Bobcat?
Thanks all

And, would deleting the sample of the language guide and extra voice,
text and keyboard languages be okay to increase available memory?
The only certainties in my life are death, taxes and that I'll never use
Cantonese. Y'see I prefer Mandarin

You could delete those files, but I would suggest that apart from backing up the data you propose deleting, you consider consulting the Avnic Trading Technical staff (011 704-6147) on how to proceed.

'Plug and play' is a term used to describe a 'street navigator' unit  (like the Nuvi range) supplied with preloaded mapsets (either on internal memory or an SD card).

In theory, you buy the unit, walk out the shop, switch it on and begin navigating (obviates the need for the DVD supplied MapSource application: although upgrading obliges you to use it at a later stage).

Can you convert the existing preloaded mapset on the 710 to Bobcat?

Don't think so, but I will ask Avnic (although they are geared for Mac support ast this stage).

OK. Avnic tell me that Garmap software has not yet been adapted for use on Bobcat (one of those pending projects). So no, you cannot convert your Streetmaps for use on the Mac.

Christo,

There is some useful Mac OS-X info and downloads for Garmin here:

http://www8.garmin.com/macosx/

I recently successfully upgraded my mapset to Garmap Africa Series 2008 March edition as well as installing Tracks 4 Africa using only the Mac. However, unfortunately there is a PC element that is necessary to do the conversion and I was forced to go into my Windows partition via BootCamp to do this.

Simplistically:

  1. Install Map Converter for Windows into your Windows partition.
  2. Install the mapsets that you want on the Windows partition
  3. Run Map Converter for Windows on the Windows partition and save the resulting Mac mapsets in C:/Garmin (NB, do not select the recommended option called "compress")
  4. Boot up your Mac partition and install MapManager and MapInstall
  5. Run MapManager and point it to your Windows partition C:/Garmin It will then install the Mac mapsets in the right place on your Mac partition (somewhere in the user settings folder)
  6. Plug in your GPS and run MapInstall. Follow the instructions and the new mapsets will be installed

I have not used Bobcat yet but presumably you could substitute point 6 with Run Bobcat.

One last thing, I recommend that you install WebUpdater for Mac as this will ensure that your firmware stays up to date - this is the only way to update Garmin firmware via your Mac.

These downloads are all available on the web-page that I have linked to above.

Moderator, info on Mac seems to be in short supply. Perhaps this needs to be a sticky. The link to http://www8.garmin.com/macosx/ is also quite important and useful. Shout if I can help - I figured this all out by trial and error but I am sure I am not the only one in this boat.

Steve
