Sorry of this is in the wrong section but I don't see a more suitable location.

I was wondering if anyone subscribes to Garmin BirdsEye, and would be willing to share some thoughts.

I am just wondering how up to date these satellite Images are and whether their coverage in SA is worth the US$29 subs.

Thanks
Simon

I have downloaded some of the imagery.

Firstly for the Cape Peninsula, the quality is Ok, no cloud cover and looks to be reasonably up to date.

I also downloaded some files for the Cedarberg - mostly good quality, but there is a block of stuff at very low res.

It seems to be a bit hit and miss for some areas, but if I wanted aerial imagery on my unit for say the Cape Peninsula, the $29 I spent was worth it over the hassle of creating Garmin Custom Maps for the same area.

Thanks Andy (Are you the Andy from FBUC?)

Would it be possible for you to do a couple of screenshots of the Cederberg area (one good one bad)

Simon, The question is just why would you want to pay for something you can get free on Google Earth.  Or does Garmin have aspects that Google does not have?  I know Microsoft has a program similar to Google that I had a look at some time back.  On this you could super impose a map on the birds eye view which assisted in identifying points of interest. In the mean time Google has improved it's search facility so that I felt no further need for MS.

Hi Simon

Yup it is me :-)

Will try for the screenshots, just not today.

You can download Birdseye without a subscription through Basecamp at any quality level provided you have a compatible unit - an Oregon in my case. You will just not be able to send it to your GPS.

How do you load Google Earth Images onto the GPS then? You can't as far as I am aware.

For a "good" area, try a few tiles around Wupperthal.
For a "poor" area look a few km north of Citrusdal (around say 5km), although I suspect the town itself is not so great.

Here's a free alternate, but as it is custom maps that you are creating you are limited to 100 tiles at around 1000 x 1000 pixels.
If you only want a small ares it may do the job.
