In the pst two weeks I have been traveling in the JHB CBD and surrounding areas and my Garmin NUVI 1310 displayed "Lost satelite reception"'. It keeps on doing it in the exact same places. I took my garmin nuvi 710 and connected it up too, to see if the 1310 is faulty. The 710 and the 1310 loses sattelite reception at the same places within seconds of eachother. Is there a general problem? Is there anyone else experiencing the same problem, before I take my Garmins in for repairs?

1. 2 GPS'r's loose signal in almost the same place
2. in the CBD
that should indicate that there aint nothing really wrong with your equipment but rather just a loss of signal in and around tall buildings no need to panic

Hi Sardick and welcome to the forum.
I agree with RIH as it would be very unlikely for two units to
need repairs simultaneously....
High buildings will definitely influence reception. My nuvi
sometimes looses its signal while the eTrex still has a strong
signal right next to it, but that has to do with the type of
antenna system installed in the different units.

Then there is this possibility ...

With two of my three brain cells being Time Share Units it is easy to see why I forgot that possibility........
What bothered me was that sardick's problem seems to be localised to a certain area. Wouldn't space weather have a more widespread effect?

Thank you very much. Your comments makes a lot of sense. While travelling today, I did not experience any "lost satellite receptions", considering that it is a bit warmer and clear sky, and this is the very same route that I have experienced the problems on. Your explanations makes good sense. I will monitor the situation and give you guys feedback. The main reason for my concern is that I have been using GPS's for approximately 2 years and I never ever had a "lost sattelite reception", besides in our undergroung parking.

Yes MN, a very valid remark. And also more of a sporadic nature, I would imagine. But I am no expert in this field. I do agree that since both units behaved exactly the same that the units are not at fault here. Another possibility, which we had before, is the presence of high tension wires or a substation. (electrical fields around transformers).
Maybe sardick can let us know what the surroundings look like where this occurred.
